Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has exciting news for travelers as they are gearing up to introduce their third daily flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) starting in October 2025. This latest route extension comes on the heels of an uptick in air rights between Malaysia and Australia, with weekly seats boosted to 50,000 in November 2024 from the previous limit of 36,000. This move will elevate SYD Airport’s annual seat capacity on the KUL-SYD route to over 630,000, making it the highest capacity route for any Australian airport. The journey towards unlimited passenger capacity between the two countries is set to commence in 2026.
In a recent statement, Scott Charlton, CEO of Sydney Airport, expressed his enthusiasm for the new development, saying, “Malaysia Airlines is one of our most iconic airline partners – our relationship dates back to 1974 and we look forward to continuing to grow together in the future.” Charlton also extended his appreciation to the Australian government, specifically highlighting Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's efforts in expanding air traffic rights between the two nations. “Sydney Airport has experienced strong international growth over the past year, reinforcing our position as the leading choice for new airline capacity into Australia and cementing our status as the nation’s gateway,” Charlton noted.
The Hon. Catherine King MP, Australia’s Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Local Government, also chimed in on the positive impact of the increased flight capacity, stating, “In 2023, over 175,000 Malaysian tourists traveled to Australia, and in 2025, we’re expecting that number to grow with the support of this increase in capacity. The Albanese Labor Government has signed a record number of bilateral air service agreements during our term, and we’re thrilled to see Sydney Airport turning them into a reality – with Türkiye, Hong Kong, and now Malaysia.”
Exciting times lie ahead for travelers as Malaysia Airlines expands its services, providing more options for seamless travel between Kuala Lumpur and Sydney. Keep an eye on Pilotcenter.net News for more updates on this developing story!
