The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has granted Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways temporary authorization to collaborate within an integrated alliance, paving the way for exciting new flight options between Australia and Doha. The interim approval, announced by Mick Keogh, Deputy Chair of the ACCC, permits the airlines to promote and sell a total of 28 weekly round-trip flights connecting Doha with key Australian cities like Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney.

This partnership marks a strategic move for both airlines, with Virgin Australia gearing up to launch new services to Doha from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane in June 2025, followed by services from Perth in November of the same year. The agreement also outlines a safety net for customers who have already booked these new flights, ensuring they will have the option of a refund or re-accommodation on alternative flights if final regulatory approval is not granted. This commitment underscores the airlines' dedication to customer service and satisfaction.

In a unique twist, Virgin Australia will be operating these new routes using Qatar Airways aircraft and crew, a practice commonly known as ‘wet leasing.’ The proposal put forth by both parties includes a request for a five-year permission period, although a final decision is pending from the ACCC, with a draft expected to be released in February 2025.

This development opens up a world of possibilities for travelers seeking seamless connections between Australia and Qatar, setting the stage for a potential game-changer in the aviation industry. Stay tuned for further updates as Pilotcenter.net News continues to follow this story closely.
