Air Algérie, the national airline of Algeria, has recently announced a significant investment in expanding its fleet by ordering 16 brand-new ATR 72-600 aircraft. This move comes as part of the airline's plans to launch a new regional subsidiary and enhance its domestic connectivity. The agreement between Air Algérie and ATR, a leading aircraft manufacturer, was officially revealed on July 4, 2025, praising their long-standing partnership that dates back over two decades.

Currently operating 12 ATR 72-500s and three ATR 72-600s, Air Algérie initially introduced ATR airplanes into its fleet back in 2003, with additional orders placed in 2008 and 2014. The new turboprop aircraft, fitted with PW127XT engines and boasting 72 seats, is scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2028, furthering the airline's commitment to modernizing its operations.

The regional subsidiary, named 'Domestic Airline,' joins Air Algérie's existing subsidiaries, including Air Algérie Catering, Air Algérie Cargo, and Amadeus Algérie, in supporting comprehensive air transport services throughout the country. Hamza Benhamouda, CEO of Air Algérie, expressed his enthusiasm for the ATR 72-600, highlighting its vital role in connecting Algeria's diverse regions and promoting sustainable air travel.

With a strong focus on environmental responsibility, Benhamouda emphasized the aircraft's fuel efficiency and its importance in reducing emissions, aligning with Air Algérie's objective of advancing eco-friendly aviation practices. The airline's investment in this new fleet and the acquisition of Africa's first ATR 72-600 simulator signifies their commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and operational excellence in Algerian aviation.

Marking a historic milestone for African operators, this substantial order underscores the ATR 72-600's proven capabilities and its significant impact on facilitating regional connections. Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, CEO of ATR, commended Air Algérie's trust in the aircraft model, noting its exceptional performance in various challenging environments and its role in supporting sustainable growth.

The installation of the ATR 72-600 simulator at Air Algérie’s training center reaffirms the airline's dedication to training and skill development, ensuring that their staff are equipped to operate these advanced aircraft effectively. This strategic move not only strengthens Air Algérie's position in the regional aviation sector but also reinforces the airline's enduring partnership with ATR, based on a shared commitment to fostering growth and connectivity within the region.
