Air France-KLM Group and Saudia, the flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, recently sealed a significant partnership with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU). This momentous occasion took place on November 3, 2024, coinciding with President Emmanuel Macron's presence at the Saudi-French Investment Forum in Riyadh. The aim of the MoU is to bolster collaboration in various areas such as passenger transport and aircraft maintenance between the two renowned companies.

Pilotcenter.net News reports that the agreement between the three SkyTeam alliance members signifies a commitment to enhancing their current codeshare and interline commercial agreements. Through this collaboration, passengers can expect increased travel options between and beyond their respective hubs, ultimately improving the overall customer experience. Furthermore, the partnership includes plans to streamline operations, including terminal co-location at key airports.

A notable component of the agreement involves Air France Industries-KLM Engineering and Maintenance (AFIKLM E&M) securing a minimum of 50% of the maintenance work on Saudia's GE90 engines, commonly found on Boeing 777 aircraft. This entails not only the maintenance work but also the localization of the module assembly and disassembly process for these engines. Additionally, there is a potential for future collaboration in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) sector, with considerations for a joint venture focusing on GEnx engines used on Boeing 787 aircraft.

Benjamin Smith, CEO of Air France-KLM, emphasized the longstanding partnership between Saudia and their company, highlighting the benefits of expanding commercial cooperation. Smith noted the strategic significance of MRO activities and the potential for unlocking new opportunities in Saudi Arabia and the broader region.

The initiatives outlined in the agreement are pending approval from the relevant authorities. Additionally, Air France-KLM announced plans for a new service between Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Riyadh, to be operated by Air France starting in the summer of 2025. Majid Khan, CEO of Saudi Air Connectivity Program, expressed enthusiasm for this development, emphasizing the positive impact on tourism by facilitating direct flights between King Khalid International Airport and Charles de Gaulle Airport.

This alliance marks a meaningful step towards closer ties and enhanced operational capabilities between Air France-KLM Group and Saudia, setting the stage for increased collaboration in the aviation industry.
