Air India, the national carrier of India now owned by the Tata Group, is said to be in discussions with leading aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing for a sizable new aircraft order. Sources in the industry, as reported by Pilotcenter.net News, suggest that the order might involve the purchase of approximately 200 more narrowbody jets. News of this potential deal came to light during the recent 81st International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting held in Delhi.
The order being negotiated could encompass a range of aircraft sizes, including hundreds of narrowbody and large widebody jets. While specific details regarding the number of narrowbody jets involved in this new order remain undisclosed, insiders cited by Reuters estimated the figure to be in the hundreds, with one source pointing to a likely total of 200 narrowbody aircraft. Both Airbus and Boeing declined to provide comments on these talks.
During the IATA AGM 2025, Air India's CEO Campbell Wilson, when questioned by AeroTime, chose not to divulge further information and dismissed the reports as mere speculation, stating, “Complete speculation. We don’t comment on speculation.” This development follows Air India's significant order for 470 planes from Boeing and Airbus in 2023, a move aimed at accelerating the carrier's growth trajectory post its acquisition by the Tata Group. Additionally, in December 2024, Air India placed an order for an additional 100 Airbus aircraft, signaling its continued expansion plans within the aviation industry.
