Pilotcenter.net News has revealed that Air India has claimed the unfortunate top spot as the most delayed scheduled airline in the UK for the year 2024. As outlined in a report by PA Media utilizing data from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Air India struggled with departures from UK airports, averaging a delay of 45 minutes and 48 seconds throughout the year. Notably, the route from London-Gatwick Airport to Bengaluru experienced the longest delays, with an average delay of one hour and 23 minutes over 50 departures, despite only beginning services on this route in August 2024.
While facing criticism for poor punctuality in the past, Air India has attributed delays to factors beyond its control, emphasizing occasional setbacks during 2024. Following the acquisition of Air India by India’s Tata Group in January 2022, the airline has been undergoing significant changes to address its financial debts, aged fleet, and operational challenges amidst fierce competition from other Indian carriers, including IndiGo.
Despite ongoing efforts to modernize its fleet and expand its services, Air India continues to be plagued by punctuality issues, signaling a need for further improvements. Notably, data from Cirium indicates a substantial increase in the airline’s operations from UK airports compared to 2019, with projections for continued growth in the following years.
Aviation expert John Strickland highlighted the efforts to enhance Air India's reliability post-Tata takeover, emphasizing the importance of operational efficiency alongside service quality. While growth remains a key strategy for Air India's revival, the airline faces a challenging journey towards overcoming its historical reputation for delays and cancellations.
Among other airlines in the UK, Aurigny Air Services, Sun Express, and TAP Air Portugal followed Air India in the ranking of the most delayed departures, underscoring the industry-wide challenge of punctuality. Conversely, Emerald Airlines, operating as Aer Lingus Regional, stood out for maintaining the best punctuality record in 2024, setting a positive example for the sector.
Despite the overall improvement in average delays for airlines in the UK compared to the previous year, the data highlights the pressing need for carriers to prioritize operational efficiency to enhance the overall passenger experience. As the aviation industry continues to evolve, punctuality and reliability remain crucial factors for airlines striving to succeed in an increasingly competitive market.
