Air India is on a roll with a significant expansion of its wings and a promising plan to enhance its pilot training program. Recently, the airline not only confirmed a whopping order for 100 Airbus aircraft but also unveiled plans for its brand-new flight training school. The exciting update came in the form of an order for 31 Piper Archer DX single-engine diesel-powered training aircraft from the US-based Piper Aircraft, along with 3 DA42-VI twin-engine planes from Diamond Aircraft, a company owned by China and based in Austria.
The DA42-VI takes flight training to new heights with its modern design and fuel-efficient jet-powered engine, promising substantial savings compared to traditional AVGAS-powered aircraft. Jane Wang, the Director of Sales, Marketing, and Flight Ops at Diamond Aircraft Austria, highlighted the advantages of the DA42-VI, emphasizing how it eases the transition from single to multi-engine aircraft training and readies aspiring pilots for future careers flying larger commercial jets.
These 34 cutting-edge aircraft are scheduled to join the fleet in 2025 and will be stationed at Air India's newly established flight training center at Belora airport in Central India, near Amravati, Maharashtra. This state-of-the-art academy will be capable of producing 180 new pilots annually, boasting top-notch facilities, a fully digital operations hub, and dedicated maintenance services. Complementing this initiative is Air India's Aviation Training Academy in Gurugram, close to Delhi, which stands as the largest of its kind in South Asia, covering an impressive 600,000 square feet.
The future looks bright for Air India as it spreads its wings wider and grooms the next generation of skilled aviators to soar to new heights in the aviation industry. This significant investment in pilot training underscores the airline's commitment to excellence and innovation in the ever-evolving world of aviation.
