AirAsia has recently broadened its horizons in Vietnam with the introduction of a new direct route from Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) to Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN). The inaugural flight took off from Kota Kinabalu at 11:45 local time on December 3, 2024, and landed in Ho Chi Minh City at 12:55 local time, boasting an impressive passenger load of 96%. This latest service marks the 16th international flight route opened by AirAsia Malaysia from Kota Kinabalu.
The airline’s strategic decision to add this new route falls in line with Malaysia's ambitious tourism targets, aiming for 27.3 million international tourist arrivals by 2024 and gearing up for Visit Malaysia Year 2026. AirAsia's renewed focus on Vietnam also aligns with the country's goal of attracting 17-18 million international visitors in 2024, particularly as it heads into the peak season for global arrivals in the final quarter.
Looking ahead, Vietnam seeks to tap into the thriving Halal food market, forecasted to hit $4.5 trillion by 2030, as highlighted in a July 2024 ASEAN Briefing report. Despite Vietnam's Halal certification being in its infancy, forging connections with ASEAN nations boasting significant Muslim populations like Malaysia and Indonesia can help solidify its stance in Halal food certification.
Paul Carroll, Chief Commercial Officer of AirAsia Aviation Group, expressed excitement about this new venture, emphasizing the airline's dedication to enhancing regional connectivity and providing affordable, seamless travel experiences for passengers. Carroll stated, “Today’s launch underscores our commitment to strengthening regional connectivity while offering affordable, seamless travel for our guests. Vietnam has consistently been a key market for AirAsia, and this new service from Kota Kinabalu adds another dimension to our network.” He further added, “It not only enhances tourism potential for both Sabah and Vietnam but also supports regional trade and economic growth. We are excited to continue fostering stronger ties between these vibrant destinations.”
