Pilotcenter.net News reports that AirAsia Malaysia made headlines by launching its inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) to Darwin Airport (DRW) on June 27, 2025. The buzz surrounded Flight AK612, which took off from KUL Airport at 05:50 local time, carrying nearly 90% of passengers. After a smooth journey lasting five hours and 21 minutes, the A320neo aircraft gracefully touched down at Darwin Airport at 12:41 local time, marking the beginning of a convenient four-times-per-week service between these two vibrant cities.
This significant achievement is the outcome of a robust partnership between AirAsia Malaysia, Airport Development Group (ADG), and the Northern Territory Government through the Tourism Aviation Attraction Scheme (TAAS). Notably, the latest Kuala Lumpur to Darwin service by a Malaysian carrier dates back to 2018 when it was operated by Malaysian Airlines. Currently, AirAsia Malaysia stands as the sole Malaysian carrier managing this route.
In a statement, Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra, CEO of AirAsia Malaysia, expressed excitement about the foray into the Northern Territory, stating, “Australia remains one of the Group’s key growth markets, and we are thrilled to touch down today for the first time in the Northern Territory.” He emphasized the tremendous potential of the new service, highlighting its role not only in providing direct and cost-effective connectivity between Darwin and Kuala Lumpur but also as a conduit to the extensive network of over 130 destinations across Asia and beyond at competitive fares.
The Hon. Robyn Cahill OAM MLA, Australian Minister for Trade, Business, and Asian Relations, was present on AirAsia's inaugural flight to Darwin. Cahill remarked, "The Territory’s aviation sector continues to go from strength to strength with this new route providing a boost to tourism, growing business and trade, and connecting Territorians with a new international flight option.” She hailed the AirAsia partnership and collaboration with the Airport Development Group as instrumental in expanding AirAsia Group’s reach into the Northern Territory, ultimately offering travelers enhanced choices, connectivity, and competition.
This remarkable launch sets the stage for increased tourism, economic growth, and enhanced connectivity between Malaysia and the Northern Territory, underscoring the importance of strategic partnerships in advancing aviation opportunities.
