Alaska Airlines bids farewell to its iconic Boeing 737-900, marking the end of an era in aviation history. The first-ever Boeing 737-900, aged 24 years, has officially been retired after serving as a prototype for extensive testing of this model. Back in 2001, Alaska Airlines made a groundbreaking move by being the first airline to take delivery of this unique aircraft. However, with only 52 units ever produced, the 737-900 didn't achieve the popularity expected and was eventually succeeded by the upgraded 737-900ER.
Witnessing the historic moment, on April 8, 2025, the aircraft embarked on its final flight to Pinal Airpark in Arizona for retirement from active service. The emotional send-off was captured in a video that showcased the aircraft's last departure from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport en route to its new resting place. Pilots and aviation enthusiasts alike watched in awe as this aviation pioneer took its final flight before retirement.
Prior to its retirement journey, the retiring aircraft, bearing registration N302AS, completed its last service with stops at prominent airports in San Francisco, Austin, Burbank, and Seattle. This particular 737-900 holds a special place in aviation history, as it was one of the rare few in Alaska Airlines' fleet manufactured without winglets, adding to its uniqueness.
Reflecting on its legacy, Alaska Airlines commemorated the aircraft's pioneering role, recalling the moment when the renowned Iditarod Trail sled-dog race champion, Doug Swingley, and his team paraded the aircraft out of the factory for its world premiere rollout celebration in Renton, Washington.
With just four remaining airframes of this iconic aircraft type in its fleet, Alaska Airlines is set to retire them all by the end of 2025. As we bid farewell to this legendary aircraft, it leaves behind a lasting legacy in the world of aviation, reminding us of the significant role it played in shaping the airline industry.
