Bahamasair, the state-owned airline of the Bahamas, is contemplating a game-changing move as it eyes a potential order for Airbus A220 narrowbody aircraft. The plan is to phase out its aging fleet of four Boeing 737-700s and venture into new markets across the Caribbean region for expanded growth opportunities.
In a recent statement made at the Routes Americas conference in Nassau, Tracy Cooper, CEO of Bahamasair, expressed, “The main aircraft that we’re looking at is the Airbus A220. We expect to make a decision on this sometime this year, 2025. We expect that these aircraft could provide 13-15% improvements in operational costs.” The airline is eyeing an order of eight to ten A220 aircraft to modernize its fleet, with plans to utilize leasing options to make the transition smoother.
This potential shift in aircraft selection marks a significant departure from Bahamasair's current model of owning its fleet outright. The airline’s existing fleet of Boeing 737s and ATR turboprops cater predominantly to domestic flights within the Bahamas. However, challenges in sourcing spare parts for the ATR aircraft have prompted considerations for a fleet upgrade to ensure operational efficiency and reliability.
The strategic move towards Airbus A220 aircraft aligns with Bahamasair's vision to enhance connectivity and reach for its passengers. By leveraging the A220’s extended range capabilities, the airline aims to tap into new routes beyond its current US destinations, setting its sights on Latin America as well. Cooper emphasized the economic impact of Bahamasair, underscoring its role in facilitating travel to and from the archipelago, especially through vital partnerships with major carriers for seamless connectivity.
With an emphasis on bolstering tourism and sustaining local industries, Bahamasair’s potential A220 acquisition signifies a bold step towards reinforcing its position in the regional aviation sector. As the airline explores new horizons and operational efficiencies, the possibility of welcoming modern Airbus A220 aircraft into its fleet promises a brighter future for both the airline and the Bahamas' tourism sector.
