British Airways has taken a bold step by acquiring the Boeing hangar facility and MRO business at London-Gatwick Airport, previously operated by the US planemaker. This move is set to secure jobs, enhance the airline's presence at this important airport, and bring valuable skills and expertise into the business to benefit British Airways customers.

The acquisition involves the establishment of a new wholly-owned engineering subsidiary named British Airways Engineering Gatwick (BAEG), which will complement the airline's existing engineering operations in Cardiff and Glasgow. Employees currently working at the Gatwick facility under Boeing will be transferred to the new subsidiary in 2025, following necessary consultations.

This investment marks a significant move for British Airways as part of its strategy to expand its engineering capabilities. The airline aims to recruit more colleagues and grow the facility in the long run. The newly acquired hangar is expected to enhance British Airways' engineering operation at Gatwick, enabling it to conduct maintenance work on its fleet more efficiently.

British Airways' decision to take over the Boeing facility will not only boost its engineering presence at Gatwick but also minimize the need to ferry aircraft to other locations for maintenance. This aligns with the airline's sustainability goals by reducing operational costs and reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility.

Andy Best, British Airways Chief Technical Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting the benefits it will bring to the airline's operations and its commitment to excellence. The addition of the new hangar and expertise from former Boeing colleagues will enhance the reliability of British Airways' entire fleet, ensuring a seamless travel experience for customers.

By strengthening its presence at Gatwick, British Airways demonstrates its dedication to the airport and its continued efforts to provide top-notch services to passengers. This strategic move positions the airline for growth and success in the competitive aviation industry.
