China Airlines, based in Taiwan, has just made a significant move by placing an order for a total of 14 new Boeing 777 aircraft—a mix of 777-9s and 777-8 freighters. This decision solidifies their position as the newest customer for Boeing's 777X series. This deal, which was finalized in March of 2025, was officially confirmed by Boeing on May 8 and subsequently listed on their orders and deliveries website. In addition to the firm order for the 14 aircraft, the agreement includes an option for China Airlines to acquire an additional five 777-9s and four 777-8 freighters in the future.
The announcement comes following China Airlines' initial plans, disclosed in December 2024, to order 10 Airbus A350-1000s along with the 777 aircraft. The A350-1000s will be equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, while the 777-9s will feature General Electric GE9X engines. Commenting on the decision, Kao Shing-Hwang, Chairman of China Airlines, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “As a long-time operator of the 777-300ER and 777 Freighter, we are excited to welcome Boeing’s newest 777X family into our world-class fleet."
This strategic investment underscores China Airlines' commitment to enhancing its fleet capabilities and maintaining a leadership position in the aviation industry. With plans to introduce the new widebody aircraft by 2029, the airline is poised for future growth and operational efficiency. Brad McMullen, Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, highlighted the longstanding partnership between Boeing and China Airlines, expressing the company's eagerness to deliver the state-of-the-art 777X aircraft adorned with China Airlines' iconic plum blossom livery.
The introduction of the 777-9 will enable China Airlines to offer an unparalleled flying experience to its passengers, with room for 426 travelers in a typical two-class configuration, covering distances of up to 7,295 nautical miles. Dan Schull, Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales, Northeast Asia, emphasized the strategic advantage of operating the 777X aircraft, enabling China Airlines to expand its capacity and fortify its position for sustained growth in the market.
Looking ahead, China Airlines aims to configure their new widebody jets with three cabin classes—Premium Business, Premium Economy, and Economy—offering passengers a diverse range of in-flight experiences. As the airline continues to upgrade its fleet, which currently consists of a mix of Boeing 777s, Airbus A330s, A350s, and 777 Freighters, the addition of the new 777X aircraft represents a significant milestone in their journey towards sustainable growth and operational excellence.
