On Wednesday, March 26, 2025, a significant moment unfolded at London-City Airport (LCY), nestling in East London’s Docklands just a hop away from Canary Wharf’s financial district. The ticking clock struck 12:01 local time as an Embraer E195-E2 regional jet, piloted by Helvetic Airways and bearing the registration HB-AZI, made its gentle descent onto the runway. This smooth landing etched a new chapter in the airport's annals. Tasked with a scheduled flight from Zurich under SWISS International's auspices (flight number LX456), the aircraft not only broke records but also surpassed the Airbus A318 previously operated by British Airways to New York from LCY until 2020.

This historic event was the fruit of a four-year collaboration between Helvetic and Embraer, the latter of whom showcased the E195-E2’s capabilities during a demonstration flight to London-City Airport back in 2021. Stretching out at 41.5 meters with room for 134 passengers, the E195-E2 is set to grace SWISS routes departing from the airport. Helvetic Airways will pilot these services under a wet-lease arrangement with SWISS, with Embraer highlighting the aircraft's unparalleled fuel efficiency among all planes operating at London-City.

The maiden voyage took off from Zurich at 11:45 local time, landing at LCY's runway 09 shortly after midday, offering a breathtaking aerial view of London en route. The aircraft made a special impression with its ‘E195-E2 Largest aircraft in LCY’ decal adorning the fuselage.

Reflecting on the successful landing, Tobias Pogorevc, Helvetic Airways' CEO, praised the unwavering commitment of the cockpit crews and the capability of the aircraft on navigating LCY's unique steep approach. Excited about being the first airline to bring the larger E195-E2 to the airport following the E190-E2 introduction in 2021, Pogorevc emphasized the flexibility this brings for wet-lease clientele.

Alison FitzGerald, London City Airport's CEO, expressed delight at ushering in the E195-E2, a testament to the airport’s pledge to introduce eco-friendly, cutting-edge aircraft. The adoption of quieter and cleaner planes allows for sustainable growth without compromising on passenger experience.

Marie-Louise Philippe, Embraer Commercial Aviation's Senior Vice President, shared enthusiasm for another E2 accolade at London City, hailing the aircraft's environmental credentials and regional connectivity it brings. Philippe also teased the possibility of expanding the E195-E2's range with the anticipated E2TS system, paving the way for new destinations like Istanbul, Gran Canaria, and more.

The E195-E2, known for its efficient performance and sustainability, adds a feather to the cap of Swiss regional airline Helvetic Airways. The carrier operates a diverse fleet on various air services including scheduled, charter, and wet-lease flights. Collaborating closely with SWISS International Air Lines, Helvetic Airways provides exceptional services that underscore the airline's commitment to quality flying experiences.
