Exciting News: Eurowings to Upgrade Fleet with 40 New Boeing 737 MAX 8 Jets
In a major move set to transform its operations, Eurowings is gearing up to replace its current fleet of Airbus A319s and older Airbus A320 models with 40 cutting-edge Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets. The decision comes hot on the heels of Lufthansa Group's confirmation of the allocation.
The strategic upgrade was set in motion when Lufthansa Group, having placed an initial order for 40 new Boeing 737 MAX 8s with options for 60 more back in December 2023, revealed on January 20, 2024, that Eurowings would be taking the reins of these state-of-the-art aircraft.
Carsten Spohr, the Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of the Lufthansa Group, commended Eurowings for its success, saying, “Eurowings has positioned itself as the go-to European point-to-point airline within the Lufthansa Group, showcasing a compelling strategy and leveraging its exceptional workforce in a fiercely competitive market."
With the first brand-new Boeing 737-8 expected to join the fleet in 2027, Lufthansa Group describes this fleet modernization as one of the most significant in European aviation history. This move is part of the Group's commitment toward sustainable aviation practices and represents a $5 billion investment in the fleet.
In a bid to enhance passenger experience, the modernized short and medium-haul jets will feature a revamped cabin layout offering increased comfort and accommodating up to 189 passengers.
Jens Bischof, the CEO of Eurowings, expressed enthusiasm for the company's future, stating, “With 40 cutting-edge aircraft, we are setting the stage for a successful and sustainable future for Eurowings. This substantial investment underscores our commitment to low-emission flying, achieved through reduced fuel consumption, lower emissions, and decreased noise levels."
Bischof emphasized the cost efficiency of the new aircraft, enabling Eurowings to continue offering customers competitive fares. He stressed the importance of technological advancements in ensuring the airline's competitiveness in the evolving airline market landscape.
In tandem with the order for the Boeing 737-8s, Lufthansa Group confirmed the acquisition of 40 Airbus A220-300s for Lufthansa City Airlines, signaling an exciting phase of growth and modernization for the airline conglomerate. Stay tuned for these cutting-edge additions taking flight soon!
