Finnair Initiates Talks with Pilots Amid Ongoing Industrial Action

Finnair is set to kick off negotiations with its pilots in light of the persistent strike for improved wages by the Finnish Transport Pilots’ Association (SLL). The airline revealed on February 7, 2025, the possibility of personnel reductions due to potential changes in its cooperation agreement stemming from the pilots' industrial action.

As discussions are scheduled to begin on February 12, 2025, about a potential furlough of up to 90 pilots, Finnair, currently employing around 1,000 pilots, faces tough decisions. The pilot union's escalation of strike actions, which now includes a stand-by ban encompassing partner carrier flights and relevant pilot transfers, has prompted the need for negotiations on the future of the cooperation agreement.

In response to the situation, Kaisa Aalto-Luoto, Finnair's Chief People Officer, expressed disappointment, stating, "It is sad that the pilot union’s prolonged industrial action has led to a situation where we have to start change negotiations." She reflected on the airline's history, emphasizing that operational reasons have never previously necessitated a reduction in pilot positions, even during challenging times affecting the operating environment.

Additionally, discussions will involve the potential inclusion of stand-by duties in employment contracts, a point of contention with the pilot union, which insists on voluntary stand-by shifts. Aalto-Luoto highlighted the industry norm of stand-by duties and the necessity of recognizing them as part of the job, noting that preparations are underway to formalize stand-by duty in all pilot contracts.

Despite over five months of collective agreement negotiations with the Finnish Transport Pilots’ Association (SLL), which have failed to yield concrete results due to the pilot union rejecting multiple settlement offers, Finnair remains committed to finding a resolution amidst the ongoing industrial action.
