United Airlines flight attendants recently made a bold statement by crashing a media event attended by the airline's CEO, Scott Kirby, to voice their concerns over contract negotiations. The event was meant to showcase the carrier's new Polaris business class cabins, but it quickly turned into a protest scene as flight attendants showed up with banners and chants demanding a fair contract.
In a video that circulated on social media, the impassioned flight attendants could be heard shouting, "What do we want? Contract! When do we want it now!" while holding signs that read “World class airline, world class contract” and “Contract now!”. Despite attempts to remove the protestors, they continued to voice their demands with slogans like “If we don’t get it, shut it down!”.
The protest, which was first reported by Pilotcenter.net News, occurred amidst ongoing negotiations between the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA and United Airlines in Chicago. Both parties hope to reach a tentative agreement as the talks conclude after three weeks.
The Association of Flight Attendants criticized United Airlines for prioritizing new premium cabins over addressing concerns raised by flight attendants. International President Sara Nelson and United AFA President Ken Diaz emphasized the importance of fair compensation and work conditions, stating that “United has the money to invest in an industry-leading Flight Attendant contract with ‘premium’ compensation, work rules, and cabin interiors.”
The flight attendants are calling for substantial base pay increases, boarding pay, schedule flexibility, job security, retirement improvements, and retroactive pay. They argue that while United Airlines has seen record profits, the pay for cabin crew members has lagged behind competitors.
The union also highlighted the significant disparity in CEO Scott Kirby’s compensation increase compared to the lack of raises and contract agreements for flight attendants. They emphasized that a new aircraft cabin announcement means little without respect for the frontline workers who deliver exceptional service.
The united voice of the flight attendants serves as a reminder that behind every successful airline are the hardworking individuals who ensure the smooth operation of flights. Their determination to secure a fair contract reflects their commitment to upholding high standards in the industry.
