Former Lufthansa CEO and Star Alliance Co-Founder Jürgen Weber Passes Away

Jürgen Weber, the former CEO of Lufthansa and co-founder of Star Alliance, has sadly passed away at the age of 83, as announced by the German flag carrier. Fondly referred to as ‘Mr Lufthansa’, Weber's journey with the airline began in 1967 when he joined as a young engineer. He continued to serve as Honorary Chairman of the Supervisory Board until his recent passing on May 12, 2025.
During his tenure from 1991 to 2003 as CEO and later from 2003 to 2013 as Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Weber played a pivotal role in reshaping and privatizing Lufthansa. Carsten Spohr, the current CEO, paid tribute to Weber, acknowledging his unwavering commitment to the company by stating, “Like no other, Jürgen Weber embodied the renewal of Lufthansa during its restructuring and privatization in the 1990s.”
In a heartfelt statement, Spohr expressed the airline's gratitude for Weber's exceptional contributions, remarking that crucial decisions and advancements within Deutsche Lufthansa AG will forever be associated with his name. The legacy he leaves behind is one of strategic foresight and dedication to the success of the Lufthansa Group.
Karl-Ludwig Kley, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, also reflected on Weber's profound impact, emphasizing that Lufthansa, as it exists today, would not have been possible without his visionary leadership.
