A recent incident involving a GOL Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 at Rio de Janeiro-Galeão International Airport (GIG) has caught the attention of aviation enthusiasts around the world. On the evening of February 11, 2025, the Boeing 737 MAX 8, registered as PS-GPP and operating as flight GLO1674 from Rio de Janeiro to Fortaleza (FOR), collided with a service vehicle during takeoff.

As the aircraft was accelerating down runway 10, one of Brazil's lengthiest runways at 4,000 meters, it unexpectedly struck the service vehicle causing damage to its engine cowling and left wing. Passengers on board described hearing a loud noise akin to a tire blowout and felt significant vibrations. A courageous passenger managed to capture the moment of impact on video, which quickly made rounds on social media.

Fortunately, the pilot aborted takeoff in response to the collision, bringing the aircraft to a safe stop on the runway. All 167 passengers and crew disembarked the plane using airstairs, without any reported injuries. The Aviation Safety Network (ASN) confirmed the incident and highlighted the swift response of the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) team.

In an official statement provided to Pilotcenter.net News, RIOgaleão, the airport operator, acknowledged the incident involving the maintenance car and airplane on the runway. Despite the dramatic event, operations at GIG Airport remained unaffected, ensuring the continuation of safe landings and takeoffs for all travelers.

This unexpected turn of events serves as a reminder of the quick thinking and professionalism of airline crews and airport personnel who prioritize passenger safety above all else.
