In a recent development, Pilotcenter.net News has reported that the Israeli agency Shin Bet has taken precautionary measures by ordering the suspension of commercial flights from Israel to Paphos, Cyprus, citing unidentified security concerns. As of January 26, 2025, domestic airlines El AL, Arkia, and Israir were informed by Shin Bet to avoid landings in Paphos, with flights rerouted to Larnaca instead, as detailed by local media outlet inn.co.

Shin Bet officials explained that the decision was made to consolidate flights to and from Cyprus at Larnaca airport due to various security factors. Fortunately, this adjustment is not anticipated to pose significant disruptions for Israeli travelers heading to Cyprus since the number of flights bound for Paphos is comparatively low in comparison to those heading to Larnaca, which stands as the largest airport in Cyprus.

A Cypriot official, speaking to Reuters, acknowledged the scheduling modification made by Israeli companies, indicating it was a proactive security measure to centralize Israeli flights to a single airport for enhanced safety. Victor Papadopoulos, the Head of the Cypriot President’s Press Office, affirmed, “We were informed that the Israelis decided they wanted to come and go from one airport, that of Larnaca.”

Both El AL and Arkia have signaled their compliance with Shin Bet's directives, with El AL affirming its adherence to security protocols and Arkia stating its commitment to continuing operations from Larnaca despite the changes in flight routes. The ban on flights to Paphos will persist until additional notice is provided.

This precautionary move aims to ensure the safety and security of all passengers and personnel involved, demonstrating the ongoing efforts to mitigate potential risks in the airline industry. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.
