Lufthansa has recently shared detailed plans on how it will integrate the newly acquired Italian carrier ITA Airways into its global operations in the future. The German airline group made the official announcement on February 3, 2025, outlining a range of activities that will follow the merger. These activities include aligning frequent flyer programs, coordinating flight operations at specific airport terminals, providing lounge access, implementing codesharing, and synchronizing flight schedules.

During a press conference in Rome, Carsten Spohr, CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Sandro Pappalardo, Chairman of ITA Airways, and Joerg Eberhart, CEO of ITA Airways, highlighted the efforts already made by Lufthansa to integrate ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group. These steps are aimed at benefiting customers of both airlines and enhancing the overall travel experience.

Effective immediately, members of Lufthansa’s loyalty program 'Miles & More' can earn and redeem miles on all ITA Airways flights. Similarly, members of ITA Airways' frequent flyer program, Volare, can earn and redeem their points on flights operated by Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines. This reciprocal program extends the benefits to a larger customer base.

As of March 30, 2025, ITA Airways passengers and travelers on Lufthansa Group airlines will be able to enjoy joint operations within the same terminal at Frankfurt Airport and Munich Airport. This move aims to facilitate seamless transfers between flights for passengers, enhancing convenience and travel experience.

The coordination of flight schedules between the main hubs of the Lufthansa Group and ITA Airways will be optimized to offer more flexibility in travel plans. Additionally, lounge access will be expanded, allowing ITA Airways passengers to access approximately 130 lounges of the Lufthansa Group worldwide. A new codeshare agreement will further enhance booking options for passengers, providing more choices and flexibility.

Carsten Spohr emphasized the importance of quickly integrating ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group to provide enhanced benefits to passengers and stakeholders. The successful inclusion of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group is seen as a promising step towards mutual success for both airlines.

In a significant move, ITA Airways will transition from the SkyTeam alliance to join the Star Alliance, of which Lufthansa has been a member since its founding in 1997. This strategic shift is believed to be critical for the future success of the expanded airline group. The transition to Star Alliance is set to take place in the first half of 2026, with preparations already underway.

As part of the transition process, all stakeholders are working closely to ensure a smooth exit from the SkyTeam alliance by ITA Airways and a seamless entry into the Star Alliance. This strategic move aligns with the broader vision for growth and collaboration within the global aviation industry.
