A dispute has arisen between the Latvian government and airBaltic, the country's largest airline, over the recent cancellation of 4,670 flights for the airline's 2025 summer season due to Pratt & Whitney engine maintenance issues. This problem stems from technical challenges in the GTF engines, affecting airlines worldwide. Despite facing criticism for leasing part of its fleet to Lufthansa amid capacity constraints, airBaltic CEO Martin Gauss defended the decision as beneficial for the company's profitability. While the Latvian government calls for Gauss's resignation, he asserts that the global nature of the engine issues is beyond the airline's control.
Despite past financial pressures during the pandemic, airBaltic posted a profit in 2023 and continues to secure financial stability for its future. Plans for free Starlink connectivity and an IPO in 2025 signal positive developments ahead, though ongoing political tensions may impact these ambitions. Chairman Klavs Vasks underlined the need for additional capital for the airline's long-term sustainability, amid talks with potential investors, including rumored interest from Lufthansa. Vasks expressed confidence in airBaltic's business model and IPO prospects, emphasizing the importance of cooperation to secure the airline's future and its role in Latvia's economy.
