Loganair, the UK’s largest regional airline, is set to continue providing crucial inter-island services in Scotland for the next four years. Partnering with the Orkney Islands Council, the airline will ensure essential air connectivity between various remote islands in the Scottish archipelago, supporting local communities that heavily depend on air travel for basic needs.

Under the newly extended contract, Loganair will operate lifeline public service routes from Kirkwall Airport (KOI) to islands such as Westray, Papa Westray, North Ronaldsay, Sanday, Eday, and Stronsay. Of particular note is the route between Westray and Papa Westray, known as the world’s shortest commercial flight lasting just two minutes in the air, which Loganair services with its eight-seat Britten Norman Islanders.

Luke Farajallah, CEO of Loganair, emphasized the importance of these inter-island services, stating, “The communities and individuals who rely on air transport for safe and convenient travel are at the heart of what we do. We are proud to continue serving these communities and look forward to keeping them connected through our reliable services for years to come.”

This long-standing commitment to the Orkney Islands dates back to 1967 when Loganair, in partnership with the Orkney Islands Shipping Company, established the lifeline air links that have since become essential for the region. The airline’s dedicated team based in Kirkwall plays a critical role in ensuring reliable and affordable air travel for residents and visitors alike.

In addition to facilitating travel, Loganair’s services support the delivery of education, healthcare, and essential services to the North Isles of Orkney year-round. Mellissa Thomson, North Isles Councillor, expressed gratitude for Loganair’s consistent support, stating, “Our inter-isles air service is crucial for our communities, providing essential access and alternatives to ferry travel. We are confident in Loganair’s ability to continue serving our islands with loyalty and dedication.”

As Loganair looks ahead to 2025 and beyond, the airline remains committed to strengthening its relationship with the Orkney community and maintaining its role as a reliable air transport provider for the region. With a focus on sustainability and accessibility, Loganair aims to uphold its legacy of connecting remote island communities through air travel for years to come.
