Norse Atlantic Airways recently made headlines once again, successfully completing its second charter mission to the remote Troll Airfield in Antarctica. This milestone comes exactly one year after the airline made history by being the first to land a Boeing 787 Dreamliner on the icy blue runway of Antarctica. The Dreamliner, with the registration LN-FNC and aptly named ‘Everglades’, touched down in Antarctica on November 15, 2024, at 10:55 local time, as per the announcement from the airline itself.
On board the aircraft were 10.5 tons of crucial research equipment and scientists from the Norwegian Polar Institute and Aircontact. Mette Birkedahl, Director of Charter and ACMI at Norse Atlantic Airways, expressed pride in the accomplishment, stating, “Returning to Antarctica with our Dreamliner reaffirms Norse Atlantic’s ability to handle complex logistical operations. We’re pleased to showcase the capabilities and efficiency of our aircraft and the operational excellence of the Norse Atlantic charter team."
The journey itself followed a route from Oslo to Cape Town, then to Troll Airfield, and back to Cape Town before returning to Oslo. This routing mirrored the airline’s inaugural groundbreaking landing in 2023. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, renowned for its capacity for long-haul flights of up to 15,400 kilometers, performed admirably once again.
John Guldahl, Director of Operations and Logistics at the Norwegian Polar Institute, emphasized the significance of landing such a large aircraft for the second time in Antarctica, stating, “It is an important milestone for us and opens up new logistics opportunities at Troll. This allows us to transport more cargo and individuals on the same flight, further bolstering Norwegian research efforts in Antarctica.”
Norse Atlantic Airlines is on track to fulfill a total of four charters to Antarctica dedicated to supporting scientific research, showcasing their commitment to advancing exploration and research in the southernmost continent.
