Norse Atlantic Airways recently revealed an exciting new leasing agreement with IndiGo, the leading Indian low-cost carrier. The agreement includes the lease of three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, expanding their partnership further. This announcement comes hot on the heels of a previous deal between the two airlines, adding more widebody aircraft to IndiGo's fleet by the second half of the year.
The initial agreement between Norse Atlantic and IndiGo, which was confirmed on February 6, 2025, saw the lease of a single Boeing 787-9 for flights between Delhi and Bangkok starting March 1, 2025. The newly announced leasing deal covers a six-month period, with the potential for a extension up to 18 months, pending regulatory approval.
A spokesperson for Norse Atlantic expressed the airlines' commitment to exploring more opportunities for collaboration, indicating a positive outlook for their future endeavors. Back in December 2024, Norse Atlantic had hinted at plans to lease several of its Boeing 787-9s to an international airline in 2025, setting the stage for their recent agreements with IndiGo.
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, expressed excitement about the extended partnership with Norse Atlantic, emphasizing the strategic advantages these additional aircraft will bring, especially in the European market. Elbers shared insights into IndiGo's broader strategy, highlighting their ambitions to become a global player by 2030, with a strong foothold in India and a trajectory of continuous growth and expansion.
In anticipation of their long-haul expansion, IndiGo has solidified plans by placing orders for 30 Airbus A350-900s, with the option for an extra 70 aircraft, set to be delivered starting in 2027. The UK's Civil Aviation Authority defines a damp lease as an arrangement for a wet-leased aircraft that includes a cockpit crew but excludes cabin attendants, shedding light on the technicalities of such agreements in the aviation industry.
