Norwegian Airlines has confirmed a significant aircraft acquisition deal, designed to bolster its existing fleet. Revealed to investors on March 3, 2025, this move is seen as a pivotal moment in securing the company's future operations. The airline is set to purchase 10 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which are currently a part of its leased fleet.
This strategic decision is anticipated to result in substantial cost savings for Norwegian, amounting to an average of around NOK 200 million ($17.8 million) annually after accounting for financing costs. Furthermore, the acquisition is expected to generate a one-time gain of approximately NOK 570 million ($50.7 million) for the airline. This gain is attributed to the favorable pricing secured by Norwegian for the aircraft and the subsequent reduction in lease liabilities.
Geir Karlsen, the CEO of Norwegian, expressed confidence in the move, stating that the terms of the agreement are advantageous for the company and align with its long-term fleet and ownership strategy. The acquired aircraft will seamlessly integrate into Norwegian's existing fleet, which operates across a diverse and expanding route network. In addition to immediate cost savings, this acquisition is projected to provide enhanced financial flexibility and support future fleet planning efforts.
To fund the transaction, Norwegian intends to utilize its cash reserves temporarily while finalizing long-term financing arrangements. Presently, Norwegian's fleet includes 31 Boeing 737-800s in operation, alongside 10 737-800s under wet lease agreements. The airline also operates six Boeing 737 MAX 8s, with three more on wet lease, and anticipates the arrival of 50 new 737-8s in the near future.
This strategic aircraft acquisition represents Norwegian's commitment to optimizing its fleet composition to drive operational efficiency and meet evolving market demands. Stay updated with more aviation news at Pilotcenter.net News.
