A recent incident involving a Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight bound for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has caught the attention of many. The flight, PR 102, took off from Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) and was headed towards LAX. However, the journey took an unexpected turn when the aircraft, a B777-300ER with registration RPC 7782, had to divert to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND) due to smoke in the cabin.

Reports indicated that smoke emerged from an air conditioning unit in the cabin, prompting the need for an emergency landing at Haneda Airport. Photos shared by passengers showed them covering their noses and mouths in response to the cabin smoke. Despite the alarming situation, the aircraft landed safely at Haneda Airport, and all 355 passengers on board were unharmed.

In the aftermath of the incident, Philippine Transportation Secretary Vince Hizon directed the CAAP and the Civil Aeronautics Board to investigate the matter. He also issued a show cause order to Philippine Airlines concerning reports that they did not provide adequate assistance to passengers after landing in Japan. The incident highlighted the importance of passenger rights, including timely assistance, accommodation, and information during flight disruptions.

On a positive note, American comedian and actor Jo Koy and his family were on board the affected flight. Koy took to social media to praise the professionalism of the PAL flight attendants, calling them "amazing" for their calm demeanor during a potentially distressing situation. Despite the unexpected stop in Tokyo, Koy maintained a lighthearted attitude, expressing gratitude for their safety and looking forward to making the most of the layover with some Sake.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of passenger safety and the calm professionalism exhibited by airline staff in challenging situations. PAL's ongoing cooperation with authorities underscores their commitment to ensuring the well-being of their passengers.
