Qantas has just unveiled its exciting plans to increase flight options between Australia and New Zealand for the upcoming peak summer season, as reported by Pilotcenter.net News. The airline is set to boost capacity across the Tasman Sea by up to 20% during December 2025 and January 2026, providing around 60,000 additional seats compared to last year. This move aims to offer customers more flexibility and choices when traveling between the two countries during the popular summer holiday period.
In a statement released on May 28, 2025, Qantas detailed the enhancements on seven key routes, including increases in frequency and capacity. For instance, flights from Sydney to Auckland will see up to six additional flights per week, representing a 16% boost, while Sydney to Christchurch will offer up to seven more flights per week, a remarkable 47% increase. Melbourne to Queenstown will also experience a significant enhancement with up to two additional flights per week, resulting in a 50% rise.
Moreover, in a bid to further support tourism growth, Qantas will introduce its Boeing 787 Dreamliner on flights between Auckland and Brisbane. This move marks a significant milestone as it brings Qantas' premium economy product to this route for the first time, increasing non-economy seating options by up to 80% compared to the previous year. The 787 Dreamliner service will commence with three flights per week from August 2025 and expand to daily flights starting October 2025.
Cam Wallace, the CEO of Qantas International, expressed excitement about the expanded Tasman flying offerings and the positive impact on both the tourism and economic landscapes of New Zealand and Australia. "Giving our customers additional choice and more convenience as well as supporting tourism and economic growth in both markets is at the heart of what we do," Wallace remarked enthusiastically.
Echoing this sentiment, Andrew Waddel, Tourism New Zealand’s Regional Director – Australia, welcomed the news, highlighting the broader options now available to Australian travelers exploring Aotearoa New Zealand. With increased capacity across major ports, travelers can embark on their Kiwi adventures with even more choices at their disposal. Waddel emphasized the allure of New Zealand's tranquil coastlines, exceptional cycling trails, and delectable food and wine offerings, making it an ideal destination for Australian visitors during the vibrant summer season.
As the travel industry continues to evolve and expand, Qantas' initiatives aim to cater to diverse traveler preferences, offering enhanced experiences and fostering connections between these neighboring nations. With continuous innovation and a commitment to passenger satisfaction, Qantas is setting the stage for an exciting and memorable summer travel experience for all.
