Qantas has agreed to compensate over 1,800 ground workers who were unlawfully terminated with a settlement amount of AUD $120 million ($76 million) following a partnership with the Australian Transport Workers Union (TWU). The Federal Court of Australia had previously ruled that Qantas had wrongfully dismissed 1,820 ground workers at 10 airports in November 2020, only to replace them with contractors. In a landmark ruling in October 2024, test cases saw individuals receive compensation ranging from AUD $30,000 ($20,000) to AUD $100,000 ($67,000), with TWU predicting the total compensation to surpass AUD $100 million ($67 million).

The establishment of the compensation fund in early 2025 ensures that ex-workers will be directly paid from this pool. This resolution marks a significant victory achieved through the unity of TWU members throughout the arduous four-year legal battle. The compensations provided will address both financial and emotional losses, as well as include funds for the TWU and administrative expenses for fund distribution.

Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson expressed regret once again for the company's decision to outsource in 2020, stating, “This is an important step in bringing closure to these individuals and I want to reiterate our sincere apologies to those impacted and their families. We know this has been a difficult period for those affected and are pleased we have been able to work closely with the TWU to expedite this process and resolve it ahead of Christmas."

The Australian Council of Trade Unions Acting Secretary (ACTU) applauded the establishment of the compensation fund, describing it as the "largest case of illegal terminations in Australian industry." Joseph Mitchell, ACTU Acting Secretary, commended the TWU for their perseverance in achieving justice for the unlawfully terminated workers.

Following the long legal battle, Qantas and TWU have come to a significant resolution in the form of a $120 million compensation fund. This victory showcases the effectiveness of the union in securing justice for the affected workers.
