Qatar Airways is making a milestone return to Syria after more than a decade's absence, a significant move prompted by the country's crippling civil war that erupted in 2011, plunging it into turmoil. The airline announced on January 2, 2025, its plan to launch a thrice-weekly service linking Hamad International Airport (DOH) with Damascus International Airport (DAM) in Syria. This decision, following the removal of Bashar al-Assad as the president of Syria by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other opposition groups, including the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA), marks a turning point in regional air travel.

HTS leader, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, expressed the group's commitment to safeguarding civilians, all minority factions, and facilitating a peaceful transition of power, despite being designated as a terrorist organization by many nations. In a press release, Qatar Airways underscored that resuming operations to Syria showcases the carrier's dedication to enhancing regional connectivity and meeting the demands of passengers. Collaborating closely with relevant authorities, Qatar Airways ensures compliance with safety, security, and operational standards for the impending restart.

Mohammed Al-Meer, the CEO of Qatar Airways Group, commented, "We are thrilled to reintroduce flights to Damascus, a destination rich in historical and cultural significance. This announcement highlights our steadfast support for connectivity and seamless travel experiences for our travelers." Notably, various airlines, including Syrian Air, UR Airlines, and Cham Wings Airlines, are currently offering flights to Damascus according to flightradar24. Additionally, an Egyptair flight departing from Cairo is set to land in Damascus on January 4, 2025, joining the resurgence of air travel connectivity to the region.
