Ryanair is turning up the pressure on the UK’s National Air Traffic Services (NATS) as frustrations rise over persistent air traffic control delays affecting thousands of passengers. The low-cost airline is demanding the immediate resignation of NATS CEO Martin Rolfe, following significant disruptions for nearly 12,000 passengers traveling to and from London-Stansted Airport. Ryanair slammed the unnecessary delays of up to 50 minutes, attributing the issues to staff shortages among NATS-employed air traffic controllers.
The airline has been a vocal advocate for reforms to ensure air traffic control centers are adequately staffed to manage the increasing volume of air traffic. But despite their efforts, Ryanair laments that air traffic control delays continue to worsen, as exemplified by the recent chaos at London Stansted. This incident unfolded just a day after Ryanair unveiled its 'Air Traffic Control League of Delays', shedding light on the countries where air traffic control inefficiencies are causing the most havoc for their flights and passengers in 2025.
Ryanair's CEO, Michael O’Leary, emphasized the urgency of addressing staffing shortages and mismanagement within air traffic control centers. He pointed out that the industry saw a record surge in delays in 2024, despite a decrease in flight volumes post-pandemic. O'Leary highlighted the staggering 35% increase in air traffic control fees since COVID, underscoring the need for immediate action from EU Commission and government officials to rectify the situation.
As the summer travel season heats up, Ryanair is urging passengers to join their campaign to push for improved staffing levels and operational efficiency within air traffic control services across Europe. The airline's 'Air Traffic Control Ruined My Flight' webpage aims to mobilize travelers to pressure national Transport Ministers to address the ongoing challenges in the airspace management system. Ryanair remains steadfast in its mission to hold authorities accountable and ensure a smoother flying experience for all passengers.
