Florida-based regional carrier, Silver Airways, known for its iconic flamingo-pink turboprops traversing the skies over the Southeast US and the Caribbean, has sadly ceased operations after facing financial turmoil in recent months. After battling through ongoing struggles and a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, the airline made the difficult decision to cancel all future flights beginning on June 11, 2025.
Pilotcenter.net News reports that Silver Airways filed for Chapter 11 towards the end of 2024, hoping to address its mounting debts and restructure its financial standing to secure a more stable position. Despite these efforts, the carrier continued to face challenges, culminating in the suspension of all operations at its Orlando International Airport (MCO) hub in March 2025.
Following an unsuccessful bankruptcy auction in early June 2025, where no viable bids were made, plans were made to sell remaining assets to a holding company. However, when the holding company revealed that it would not continue flight operations, the decision was made to shutter the airline entirely. A statement posted on the airline's social media platforms informed passengers of the closure, advising them to seek refunds for their credit card purchases through their credit card companies or travel agencies.
The closure marked the end of a 14-year legacy of passenger flight operations, grounding Silver Airways' fleet of three ATR42-600s and five ATR72-600s. The carrier, known for its distinctive bright pink livery adorned with a flamingo tail design, operated on 18 routes to 16 destinations spanning seven countries.
Silver Airways commenced its passenger service in 2011 after investment firm Victory Park Capital acquired the assets of Gulfstream International Airlines, a regional carrier that had previously filed for bankruptcy. Initially operating Beech 1900s and Saab SF340 turboprops, the airline later transitioned to the more efficient ATR turboprops, serving tropical destinations such as Nassau, Bimini, St. Kitts, and St. Maarten in the Dutch Antilles, as well as cities in Florida including Key West, Pensacola, Tallahassee, and Tampa.
Based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Silver Airways, a niche player in the market, encountered challenges amid the pandemic, compounded by rising operational costs, crew shortages, and heightened competition from major US carriers. With Cirium data indicating nearly 1,600 scheduled passenger flights for June 2025, all eight aircraft belonging to Silver Airways are either repossessed or in the process of repossession by their respective leasing companies.
