South African Airways recently made a significant announcement, increasing its flight services between Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport and Perth Airport from three to five times weekly. The airline had initially added a fourth service in December 2024 and plans to further expand with a fifth weekly flight by January 2025. This boost in service comes as a welcome development, marking the carrier's commitment to serving passengers between South Africa and Australia.

Returning to Perth from Johannesburg in April 2024 after a four-year hiatus prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, South African Airways has now ramped up its operations to meet the growing demand for travel between the two continents. With SA280 now airborne and carrying a full complement of 210 passengers, the airline expressed gratitude to its dedicated staff and partners for their support.

A significant number of Australian residents, with 189,207 individuals born in South Africa according to the 2021 Australian census, reflect the strong ties between the two nations. Recognizing the importance of fostering these connections, Perth Airport’s Chief Commercial and Aviation Officer, Kate Holsgrove, lauded South African Airways’ decision to increase its services as "great news" for the region. The expanded schedule, now offering five services per week on Airbus A340-300 aircraft, will bring 131,560 additional seats annually to the Perth market.

By catering to the needs of Perth and Western Australia residents with family ties in South Africa and those eager to explore the African continent, this initiative is poised to enhance travel opportunities and cultural exchanges between the two continents. South African Airways' commitment to providing a seamless travel experience is further underscored by its A340-300 fleet, equipped with 38 business class seats and 215 economy class seats for passengers' comfort and convenience.

With this latest development, the airline reaffirms its position as a key player in connecting South Africa and Australia, bridging geographical distances and fostering closer relations between the two nations.
