Southwest Airlines recently made the decision to discontinue its long-standing policy of offering free checked baggage, a move that marks a significant shift for the popular carrier. In a statement released on March 11, 2025, CEO Bob Jordan highlighted the airline's drive to evolve rapidly and align new initiatives with its business objectives.
“With an eye towards meeting the diverse needs of our customers, reaching new market segments, and maintaining the level of profitability expected by both us and our shareholders, we are ushering in changes while upholding the core values that define us – our dedicated personnel and the exceptional, personable service they deliver,” noted Jordan.
For years, Southwest Airlines has set itself apart by allowing passengers to check in two bags at no extra cost, a perk that appealed particularly to families. However, starting from May 28, 2025, the airline will introduce charges for the first and second checked bags for many customers. Notably, Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and those traveling on Business Select fares will still be entitled to the two-bag allowance, while A-List Members and select other customers will receive one free checked bag. Additionally, Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers will receive a credit for one checked bag.
Customers who do not qualify for the complimentary baggage allowances mentioned above will be required to pay for their checked bags, with restrictions based on weight and size. Southwest also hinted at other adjustments, such as modifications to how loyalty points are accrued, the option to book flights through Expedia, and the introduction of assigned seating and extra legroom choices.
The airline recently had to make some tough decisions, including the closure of two flight attendant bases, as part of broader cost-saving measures and efforts to streamline its operations. As Southwest Airlines charts this new course, it aims to balance its commitment to top-notch customer service with the shifting demands of the industry, ushering in a new era for the beloved carrier.
