Southwest Airlines and United Airlines have recently made significant moves in the commercial aviation industry, with Southwest selling 36 Boeing 737-800s and United buying 18 Embraer E175s in sale and leaseback agreements.
In a statement and SEC filing on January 7, 2025, Southwest Airlines confirmed that it completed a sale-leaseback transaction with Babcock & Brown Aircraft Management (BBAM). Under this agreement, Southwest sold the 36 Boeing 737-800s to BBAM, which will lease them back to the carrier through Incline Aviation III for a period ranging from 26 to 37 months. Tammy Romo, Executive Vice President and CFO of Southwest Airlines, emphasized the importance of this move in fueling the airline's strategic transformation plan introduced in September: “This transaction is part of our ‘Southwest. Even Better.’ plan. By monetizing surplus value from a portion of our Boeing 737 fleet, Southwest can drive fleet modernization, offset capital expenditures, and support our capital allocation strategy.”
Steve Zissis, President and CEO of BBAM, expressed excitement about the partnership with Southwest Airlines, highlighting the commitment to delivering customized fleet financing solutions to airline partners. Meanwhile, United Airlines revealed its own sale and leaseback agreement with Mesa Airlines, with the sale of 18 Embraer E175 aircraft expected to raise $229.1 million. The proceeds will be used by Mesa Airlines to pay off associated debts, reaffirming the financial strategy behind this transaction.
With both Southwest Airlines and United Airlines making strategic moves to optimize their fleets and financial positions, the commercial aviation landscape continues to evolve, setting the stage for future growth and innovation.
