Thai Airways has stepped up its game in the aviation industry by sealing a major deal with Dublin-based SMBC Aviation Capital for eight brand-new Airbus A321neo aircraft. This exciting agreement, officially confirmed on February 5, 2025, is set to bring in the fresh fleet between the years 2026 and 2027.
The latest additions are part of SMBC’s broader Airbus order, consisting of a mix of A321neos and A321-200NXs. This move follows Thai Airways' announcement back in February 2024 at the renowned Singapore Airshow, where they revealed their plan to expand their fleet with 45 Boeing 787-9 aircraft. To complement this, a subsequent announcement was made the day after, on February 21, 2024, with lessor AerCap, confirming that Thai Airways will also be leasing a variety of Boeing and Airbus aircraft, including 10 A321neos.
Conor Stafford, Head of Airline Marketing at SMBC Aviation Capital, expressed his confidence in this collaboration by stating, “The Airbus A321neo aircraft will not only enhance Thai Airways' operational efficiency but will also elevate the overall customer experience with advanced features, promoting sustainability within the aviation industry.” He further added, “We are thrilled to be a part of Thai Airways' growth and fleet modernization journey, looking forward to a successful partnership for years to come.”
Thai Airways faced financial challenges back in 2020 that led to the unfortunate decision of filing for bankruptcy protection due to the adverse impacts of the global pandemic on air travel. However, the airline has made significant strides over the past four years, implementing a comprehensive restructuring process across the board with the primary aim of restructuring its financial situation.
Currently, Thai Airways boasts a fleet of 79 aircraft, with the Airbus A350-900 and Boeing 777-300ER standing out as the most prominent models in its lineup. With a clear strategy for sustainable long-term growth, Thai Airways is strategically replacing its aging aircraft with modern, fuel-efficient options to ensure a brighter future for the airline and enhanced experiences for its passengers.
