Tragic news struck Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) recently when a cabin crew member passed away after an Airbus A220 was compelled to perform an emergency landing in Austria due to smoke engulfing the cockpit and cabin. The devastating announcement was made by SWISS CEO Jens Fehlinger on December 30, 2024, conveying that the "young colleague died in the hospital in Graz, Austria."

Fehlinger expressed profound sorrow, stating, "His loss has left us all in the deepest shock and grief. Our thoughts are with his family, whose pain we cannot imagine. I offer them my heartfelt condolences on behalf of all of us at SWISS. And we will, of course, be doing everything in our power to help and support them at this extremely difficult time."

Details regarding the cause of the crew member's death were not disclosed out of respect for the family. On December 23, 2024, an Airbus A220-300, with the registration HB-JCD, encountered engine problems shortly after departing from Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) en route to Zurich Airport (ZRH) in Switzerland. As smoke filled the aircraft, an emergency landing was performed at Graz Airport (GRZ) in Austria, with a safe landing accomplished at 17:53 local time.

The aircraft was carrying 74 passengers and five crew members, with all passengers evacuated without harm. Two of the cabin crew members were hospitalized in Graz. SWISS issued a statement on December 24, 2024, indicating that initial assessments pointed to a technical issue in one of the engines.

Investigations are ongoing, focusing on examining mechanical components, such as the engine, and the use of Protective Breathing Equipment (PBE) for the cabin crew. SWISS is collaborating closely with authorities and manufacturers to determine the cause conclusively. The carrier emphasized the complexity of such investigations and the need for comprehensive analysis before drawing any conclusions.

Pilotcenter.net News will continue to monitor developments surrounding this tragic incident and provide updates as details unfold. May the departed crew member rest in peace, and heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved family and colleagues during this difficult time.
