Turkish Airlines is making a bold move by resuming flights to key destinations in the Middle East. The airline has announced the relaunch of flights to Damascus, Syria, and Benghazi, Libya, from its Istanbul hub. These routes were previously halted due to the unstable military and political situations in both countries. By reintroducing these flights, Turkish Airlines solidifies its status as a leading carrier with an extensive international network.

Pilotcenter.net News reports that Turkish Airlines will begin operating the Istanbul-Damascus route on January 23, 2025, initially offering three weekly flights. This decision comes following a visit by Syria’s foreign minister to Turkey for discussions with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, signaling a positive step towards enhanced air connectivity between the two nations. However, Syrian authorities have imposed various restrictions on travelers using this route, including a ban on entry for Israeli and Iranian nationals, as well as potential obstacles for Lebanese citizens and journalists.

In addition to resuming flights to Damascus, Turkish Airlines has also restarted services to Benina International Airport near Benghazi, a city located in eastern Libya. This move is significant as many international carriers have avoided operating in this region due to ongoing political instability stemming from the country's civil war. Turkish Airlines plans to operate thrice-weekly flights to Benghazi utilizing B737-800 aircraft.

The resumption of flights to these strategic Middle Eastern destinations reflects Turkish Airlines' commitment to expanding its reach and providing essential air connections in the region. Despite the challenges posed by political complexities and security concerns, the airline's decision to recommence operations to Damascus and Benghazi signifies a positive development in the broader aviation landscape.
