Turkish Airlines has hit new milestones, reaching 83.4 million passengers in 2024, marking a 2.1% increase from the previous year. This achievement was shared in a statement released by the national carrier of Turkey on January 8, 2024. The airline witnessed a significant rise in international passengers, totaling 31.7 million, up by 6.4% compared to 2023. This growth is attributed to a successful international expansion strategy undertaken throughout 2024.
Despite the overall increase in passenger numbers, Turkish Airlines reported a slight decrease in its network load factor, which fell by 0.4 percentage points to 82.2% in 2024. This metric was further delineated as 81.8% for international flights and 85.8% for domestic flights. The airline also saw an uptick in cargo and mail transportation, with a 20.6% year-on-year increase to two million tons.
In December 2024 alone, Turkish Airlines moved 6.4 million passengers across its network, demonstrating a 5.3% growth compared to the same period in 2023. By the end of the year, the carrier boasted a fleet of 492 aircraft, primarily comprised of Airbus and Boeing models, with an additional 342 aircraft on order. The airline's commitment to expansion and global reach was solidified when it secured the official Guinness World Records title for flying to the most countries worldwide. The distinguished recognition was officially conferred at a ceremony in Santago De Chile on December 22, 2024, the airline’s newest international destination.
Throughout the eventful year of 2024, Turkish Airlines not only introduced new routes but also enhanced its fleet. The airline inaugurated flights to Melbourne and Sydney in Australia, reinstated services to Afghanistan after a three-year hiatus, and commenced operations to Denver and Dallas-Fort Worth. Melbourne became the carrier’s 346th destination globally, solidifying its presence in Australia as the 130th country served. Notably, Turkish Airlines maintains its position as the sole European carrier offering direct flights from Melbourne and Sydney.
On the aircraft front, the airline made strategic decisions, such as leasing ten Boeing 737 MAX 8s and acquiring 21 Airbus A321neos in 2024. Additionally, Turkish Airlines placed an order for four new Boeing 777F aircraft directly from the US manufacturer, showcasing its commitment to modernizing its fleet for future operations. This year marked exceptional growth and achievements for Turkish Airlines, setting the stage for further success in the aviation industry.
