United Airlines recently shared an exciting update - the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has given the green light to its first aircraft type outfitted with the innovative Starlink technology, in a record time of under eight months since partnering with SpaceX. The news was made public through a statement by United on March 31, 2025, stating that the FAA had issued a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the aircraft. The airline has grand plans for its maiden commercial flight featuring Starlink in-flight internet, which is scheduled to soar on a United Express Embraer 175 in May 2025. This announcement follows closely on the heels of the recent revelation that United has commenced the implementation of SpaceX’s cutting-edge Starlink Wi-Fi connectivity system across its regional aircraft fleet.

According to United, the rapid deployment of this state-of-the-art technology is in full swing, with around 40 installations lined up every month. The airline is targeting to have its entire two-cabin regional fleet, comprising of over 300 aircraft, fully upgraded with Starlink by the end of 2025. In an effort to ensure a seamless onboard experience for passengers, alongside securing the STC, United disclosed that it will conduct a beta test of the new technology on select flights leading up to the inaugural customer flight.

Grant Milstead, United's Vice President of Digital Technology, expressed his confidence in the new offering, stating, "We know customers are going to love this experience, and we think it will give them yet another reason to choose United." Milstead further added, "We’re working closely with Starlink and the FAA to finish installs on our regional fleet this year and bring the best inflight experience in the sky to more and more people."

The collaboration between United and SpaceX was first announced in September 2024, with plans to equip all types of aircraft with Starlink connectivity. Notably, access to Starlink will be complimentary for all members of United’s MileagePlus loyalty program, further enhancing the in-flight experience for passengers. Stay tuned for more updates as United makes strides in enhancing the inflight experience with cutting-edge technology.
