VietJet, a prominent low-cost carrier in Vietnam, is making aviation history as it prepares to introduce the Chinese-manufactured COMAC ARJ21-700 jets on its domestic routes. The much-anticipated deployment is slated to kick off in mid-April 2025 and marks the airline's groundbreaking decision to incorporate these cutting-edge aircraft into its fleet.
In a recent statement, VietJet expressed its commitment to launching the ARJ21-700 on crucial routes connecting the Vietnamese mainland with Con Dao, an island of strategic importance. The airline's initiative comes at a critical time, as Bamboo Airways, which previously monopolized flights to Con Dao Airport (VCS), has suspended its services. This suspension posed a risk of severing Con Dao's air transportation link, leaving ferries as the sole alternative for travelers.
Pilotcenter.net News discovered an internal document from VietJet confirming plans to operate four round-trip flights between Hanoi (HAN) and Con Dao, as well as four more flights between Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) and the island, beginning on April 15, 2025. This launch signifies the official introduction of the COMAC ARJ21-700, also known as the C909, into the Vietnamese aviation market. To facilitate these new routes, VietJet has secured two ARJ21-700s on lease from China’s Chengdu Airlines. The first aircraft, registered as B-652G, boasts a 90-seat all-economy layout and is approximately 2.8 years old, while the second jet, registered as B-656E, is slightly newer at 1.7 years old and features a similar seating arrangement.
VietJet's current fleet comprises a diverse range of 113 aircraft, including 29 Airbus A320-200s, 42 Airbus A321-200s, 35 Airbus A321neos, and 7 wide-body Airbus A330-300s used for domestic and international flights. This strategic move by VietJet signals its ongoing commitment to innovation and service excellence in the aviation industry.
