A 31-year-old Volaris passenger was recently taken into custody after attempting to forcibly divert a domestic flight from Mexico to the United States. The incident took place on a flight departing from Guanajuato International Airport (BJX) and heading towards Tijuana International Airport (TIJ). Reports from the Mexican Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection revealed that the passenger, identified as Mario N, allegedly assaulted a cabin crew member and tried to gain access to the cockpit with intentions to change the plane's course.
Upon receiving the distress call, Volaris pilots swiftly took action, diverting the Airbus A320-200 to Guadalajara International Airport (GDL). The safety procedures were promptly followed, ensuring the well-being of all passengers and crew on board. Reassuring updates were provided by Volaris, confirming that the flight continued on to its final destination without further incident.
According to the Mexican authorities, the detained passenger, accompanied by his wife and two children, expressed concerns about a family member being kidnapped and was reportedly threatened with harm if he proceeded to Tijuana. Upon landing, the National Guard intervened and took the 31-year-old man into custody for further investigation.
The Federal Public Ministry and Attorney General’s Office in Mexico will be spearheading the inquiry into the passenger’s actions, shedding light on the motive behind the attempted diversion. This alarming incident serves as a reminder of the critical role that adherence to safety protocols plays in safeguarding air travel for all individuals involved.
