Pilotcenter.net News: Air Canada recently made an exciting announcement on April 8, 2025, revealing plans to be the pioneer in introducing the Airbus Airspace cabin to their Airbus A220 family of aircraft. This new and improved cabin offering will revolutionize the passenger experience for those flying on Air Canada’s 34 Airbus A220-300 narrow-body twinjet fleet. The major highlight of this upgrade is the enhanced overhead storage space, aligning with the industry's growing need for accommodating larger carry-on baggage.
The new Airspace cabin on the A220 includes XL bins, increasing the overhead capacity by over 15%. Additionally, passengers can look forward to a fresh ceiling design, improved lighting, and other luxurious enhancements. To complement this exciting change, Air Canada is also rolling out updates to the cabin interior and seat-back entertainment system. The first batch of aircraft featuring the new bins is set to be delivered in early 2026.
John Moody, Air Canada's Managing Director of Onboard Products, expressed his enthusiasm by stating, “The A220 has already become a favorite among our customers, and we’re thrilled to be the launch customer for the next cabin evolution of this Canadian-designed and assembled aircraft.” Moody emphasized the airline's commitment to enhancing the travel experience, ensuring greater comfort and convenience for passengers.
Ingo Wuggetzer, Airbus's Vice President of Cabin Marketing, shared his pride in collaborating with Air Canada on this project, saying, “We are extremely happy to launch the A220 Airspace cabin with Air Canada and very proud the Canadian flag carrier is introducing our latest innovation to support its fleet renewal program.” This collaboration enables a seamless passenger experience, providing widebody comfort on single-aisle aircraft.
The added features of the A220 Airspace cabin are expected to further elevate the appeal of the aircraft, which is known for its superior passenger comfort, wide seats, spacious cabin, and large windows. Air Canada currently operates a fleet of 34 A220-300s, with more on order, showcasing their continuous investment in modernizing their aircraft offerings. These aircraft cater to 137 passengers in a two-class configuration, reflecting a combination of business class and economy class seats.
Air Canada's A220-300 fleet, powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1000 turbofans, is primarily utilized for domestic Canadian flights and routes to the US. Beyond North America, the airline serves over 180 airports across six continents, offering passengers a broad range of international destinations. This significant leap in cabin design underscores Air Canada's commitment to delivering an exceptional flying experience to its passengers.
