airBaltic has just revealed an exciting new livery for their upcoming 50th Airbus A220-300, and the design is truly a sight to behold! The aircraft, set to be delivered soon, was showcased at the Airbus Mirabel assembly plant in Canada. This unique livery came to life through a competition initiated by the Latvian airline in November 2023, allowing the public, frequent flyers, as well as artists and designers, to create a custom exterior design for this special aircraft.
With a staggering 840 entries received, the competition was intense, leading to 21 designs being shortlisted after a rigorous selection process that involved over 28,000 airBaltic Club members. The winning design, which will grace the carrier’s 50th A220-300, captured over 30% of the votes and garnered accolades for its artistic portrayal of the Latvian flag and symbols representing all three Baltic States – Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania.
The lucky designer not only gets to see their creation on airBaltic’s latest aircraft but also walks away with a €3,000 ($3,278) gift certificate to enjoy with the airline. The livery features vibrant green and red hues, with elements inspired by Baltic heritage including a girl in flight with traditional symbols like a ladybug, swallow, and stork.
Martin Gauss, President and CEO of airBaltic, expressed his pride in this achievement, stating, “This milestone aircraft marks the completion of our initial aircraft order and brings us halfway to our goal of operating a single-type fleet of 100 A220-300s and doubling in size by 2030.” The unique livery celebrates the Baltic culture and showcases the beauty of the region as the aircraft soars through the skies.
Benjamin Schultz, CEO of Airbus Canada, commended airBaltic for their commitment to the A220, emphasizing its efficiency and passenger comfort. This new addition to the fleet will join other A220-300 aircraft featuring special liveries based on the national flags of the Baltic states, offering passengers a unique and memorable travel experience.
As airBaltic continues to grow and connect the Baltic region with over 70 destinations across Europe, passengers can look forward to flying in style on these exceptional A220-300 aircraft. With a fleet of 49 active A220-300s and plans to expand further, airBaltic remains a key player in the European aviation industry, providing top-notch service and connectivity for travelers around the world.
