Edelweiss Air, the leisure airline based in Zurich and affiliated with SWISS International Air Lines and the wider Lufthansa Group, is set to enhance its fleet with the acquisition of five additional A320neos. The airline has confirmed that these new aircraft will be sourced from other carriers within the Lufthansa Group, specifically from former Austrian Airlines planes. The plan is for these new additions to start joining Edelweiss Air's short-haul fleet between 2027 and 2028.
Three of the incoming A320neos are scheduled to replace the oldest Airbus A320s in Edelweiss Air's current fleet, which ch-aviation reports to be around 26 years old. The remaining two aircraft will provide the airline with added capacity to support its projected growth. These incoming planes will swell the short-haul fleet to a total of 18 aircraft, with a mix of A320s and A320neos.
This move marks a continuation of Edelweiss Air's efforts to modernize its fleet, following the recent acquisitions of Airbus A320 aircraft from sister airline SWISS. The airline's intention to stay current in the industry was reiterated when they also revealed plans to introduce two more aircraft: an Airbus A320 in October 2025 and an A320neo in March 2026.
These new additions are part of a broader modernization strategy by Edelweiss Air, which highlights the advantages of the A320neo's cutting-edge technology including enhanced engine performance and aerodynamics. Not only do these improvements result in more efficient operations and longer ranges, but they also offer passengers a more comfortable flying experience.
In addition to refreshing its short-haul fleet, Edelweiss Air is also actively working to update its long-haul operations. The retirement of its aging Airbus A340-300s, with an average age of 22 years, paves the way for the introduction of brand-new Airbus A350-900s with increased passenger capacity. Already having received two of these new aircraft, with four more on the horizon, Edelweiss Air's commitment to sustainable growth and passenger satisfaction remains steadfast.
