Passengers traveling with German budget airline Eurowings on a journey from Düsseldorf in Germany to Tromsø in Norway experienced an unexpected turn of events that led to an eight-hour journey back to their original departure point. On a fateful Saturday, March 15, 2025, Eurowings flight EW9250 was en route to Tromsø, covering a distance of 1,344 miles (2,150 km) that typically takes three hours to complete. Departing from Düsseldorf Airport on time, the Airbus A320 aircraft, registered as D-ABHG, initially set out for Tromsø but encountered challenges upon nearing the destination.
Facing strong winds of up to 48 knots (88 km/h) at Tromsø Airport, the pilots decided to divert to Rovaniemi Airport in Northern Finland to wait for the weather to improve. After a brief descent towards Rovaniemi, the crew received news of the winds calming down at Tromsø, prompting a quick turn-around back into Norwegian airspace. However, upon the second approach to Tromsø, the winds persisted, exceeding safe landing limits, leading the crew to make the tough call to fly back to Düsseldorf.
After a total of five hours in the air, the passengers found themselves back where they started, with Eurowings providing overnight accommodations to those in need while others opted to return home and try again the next day. Luckily, on Sunday, March 16, 2025, the determined travelers boarded the same A320, successfully reaching Tromsø this time around. Meanwhile, the aircraft returned to Düsseldorf with those passengers who had stayed overnight in Tromsø.
The weather ordeal at Tromsø Airport led to the cancellation of 13 flights on the same day due to the challenging wind conditions. Despite the unexpected journey, the passengers eventually made it safely to their destination, highlighting the unpredictable nature of air travel and the importance of safety above all else.
