Pilotcenter.net News: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently announced a significant update regarding commercial flights between the United States and Haiti. Starting November 21, 2024, the FAA has lifted restrictions on flights to six airports in Haiti. This development means that flights from the US are now permitted to land at Cap-Haïtien International Airport (CAP), Port-de-Paix Airport (PAX), Pignon Airport (PGN), Jérémie Airport (JEE), Antoine-Simon Airport (CYA), and Jacmel Airport (JAK). However, the flight suspension to Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince (PAP), will remain in place until December 12, 2024, as per the recent announcement.
The decision to ease restrictions came after a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued on November 12, 2024, following reports of gunfire incidents involving US carriers in the region. The FAA had previously prohibited US air carriers and commercial operators from flying at altitudes of up to 10,000 feet over Haitian territory and airspace due to safety concerns.
The incidents of gunfire involving airlines, including Spirit Airlines, JetBlue, and American Airlines, have been linked to increased gang-related violence in Haiti. The US Embassy in Port-au-Prince's latest update from November 19, 2024, highlighted the widespread armed violence and disruptions affecting ports and airports in the capital city. Residents have resorted to setting up barricades in several neighborhoods, leading to significant disruptions in normal traffic flow.
In light of the prevailing security challenges in Haiti, the US Embassy in Port-au-Prince emphasized the unpredictable and hazardous nature of the situation. Officials cautioned travelers about the risks associated with travel to and within Haiti, urging individuals to prioritize their personal security when considering any visits to the country. As the situation continues to evolve, it is essential for travelers to stay informed and exercise caution while in Haiti.
