SAS Makes Bold Move with Order of Up to 55 Embraer E-195 E2 Aircraft

Exciting news in the aviation industry as SAS CEO Anko van der Werff announced a game-changing move for the airline at a press conference in Copenhagen on July 1, 2025. The Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is set to order up to 55 Embraer E-195 E2 aircraft, with 45 firm orders and an additional 10 options. This strategic decision, valued at around US$4 billion, marks a significant step forward in SAS's transformation and vision for the future.

Van der Werff emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, "This is a bold investment in the future of SAS and a major step forward in our transformation. It is a seamless fit for us." The decision to go with the E-195 E2 aircraft was influenced by its exceptional performance and fuel efficiency. Additionally, the substantial noise reduction offered by these aircraft, up to 65% compared to previous models, is a critical factor for operations in airports like Copenhagen, located near urban areas.

Highlighting SAS's commitment to sustainability, van der Werff further explained, "Sustainability is totally ingrained in the Scandinavian way of life. Going for too long with the older generation of aircraft wouldn't have been an option for us." This move will not only support the growth of SAS's operations at hubs in Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo but also enhance connectivity between secondary cities throughout the Nordics and the airline's three capitals.

The flexibility provided by the E-195 E2 aircraft will empower SAS to expand its core Scandinavian network, offering better connectivity and retaining traffic that currently flows through hubs outside the region. International travelers are increasingly drawn to Nordic destinations for their authenticity, unique experiences, and sustainable practices, making these routes highly desirable.

This major order cements SAS as the 22nd operator of the E-195 E2 family of aircraft and comes at a crucial time for Brazilian manufacturer Embraer, following a recent loss of a major European customer to Airbus. With deliveries expected to commence in late 2027, SAS is gearing up for an exciting phase of growth and innovation in the aviation sector. Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking development!
