After a hiatus spanning over three decades, the Government of Somalia has revealed the exciting re-launch of its national flag carrier, Somali Airlines. This groundbreaking announcement was made on July 28, 2025, by Mohamed Farah Nuuh, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, following the approval of the investment by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.
Originally established in 1964, Somali Airlines had operated for more than 25 years until the outbreak of the Somali Civil War in 1991, which had a devastating impact on the nation. An integral part of reviving the airline involved Somalia reclaiming full control over its sovereign airspace and attaining a Category A classification from the International Civil Aviation Organization (IATA) in January 2023.
During a special signing ceremony, Somali Airlines disclosed its acquisition of two Airbus A320s, aiming to have these aircraft operational within the next two months. This momentous occasion represents a significant milestone for Somalia, as the national carrier prepares to soar through the skies once again, symbolizing the country's resilience and reconstruction efforts.
According to SONNA, the Somali National News Agency, the new aircraft were obtained through a purchase agreement with Lima Holding Group, with plans for additional aircraft, including larger jets for international flights, to be added to the Somali Airlines fleet in the future.
In response to the announcement, the Somali Embassy in Serbia expressed its excitement, stating, "Congratulations to Somali Airlines! After 34 years, we eagerly anticipate witnessing our national carrier gracing the skies once more—a powerful emblem of resilience and national pride for the Somali people."
This remarkable progress in Somalia's aviation sector coincides with the development of a new airport in close proximity to the capital city of Mogadishu. The inception of this new airport was initially revealed in 2024, with the laying of the first foundation stone taking place in June 2025.
