In a shocking incident at Avalon Airport (AVV), a 17-year-old teenager was arrested by Victoria Police for trying to board a flight to Sydney with a loaded shotgun. The dramatic events unfolded on March 6, 2025, sending waves of concern through passengers and airport staff alike.
Eyewitnesses aboard flight JQ 610 recounted how the teenager, donned in high-visibility reflective attire, attempted to blend in as an airport or aircraft maintenance worker. Barry Clark, a former shearer and boxer who was one of the passengers, shared his experience with Australian news outlet The Age. He revealed how passengers grew suspicious when the teenager, disguised as an aircraft maintenance engineer, failed to disembark despite completion announcements.
It was Clark who first noticed the hidden shotgun and sprang into action, assisted by a quick-thinking pilot. Tense moments were captured on video by fellow passengers, spreading rapidly on social media platforms like X.
The teenager was swiftly subdued and detained until law enforcement arrived. Superintendent Michael Reid of Victoria Police confirmed that the individual acted alone and breached security via a hole in a fence surrounding Avalon Airport. Subsequent investigation led officers to take the teenager into custody for further interrogation.
Closure of the airport ensued as authorities dealt with the aftermath of this alarming incident. A spokesperson for Avalon Airport assured the public that all matters were under police jurisdiction and that operations would resume only when deemed safe.
